96, of Van Wert passed away at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2010, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.

She was born July 5, 1913, in Ravenna, the daughter of the late C.E. and Gladys Merrill Greene. On June 14, 1939, she married Donald Sherman White, who preceded her in death in 1987.

Mrs. White graduated from Ravenna High School and, in 1935, from Oberlin College. She later received her Master of Arts degree in the Classics from Wellesley College. While her husband was in the U.S. Navy during World War II, she traveled with him to his duty stations and also worked briefly as a clerk-typist for the Navy in Mount Vernon, Iowa. After the war, she and her husband moved with their two young sons to Van Wert and lived at 730 Woodland Ave. from 1947-1961. They then moved to their current address at 676 S. Washington St. Donald owned Donald White Photography Studio, which he later sold and then joined the Lincoln Junior High School faculty, where he taught science until he retired in 1979. Eleanor taught Latin and senior English at Van Wert High School from 1952-1979, when she also retired. She devoted hundreds of extracurricular hours to the annual Roman Banquet and in training Latin students for competition in the Ohio State Scholarship contests. Both Donald and Eleanor were staunch supporters of local sports teams and seldom missed a Cougars football or basketball game. Eleanor was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Van Wert since 1947 and also was active in the American Association of University Women, the Van Wert Woman's Club, Classic Literature Club and several bridge clubs.
