Frederick S. Mullen, Jr

83, of Van Wert, died at 8:50 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home in Spencerville.

He was born April 4, 1924, in Van Wert, the son of the late Frederick S. Mullen Sr. and Opal G. (Miller) Mullen. On May 14, 1955, he married Hazel "Abbie" (Stevens) Mullen, who preceded him in death on May 16, 1996. He then married Josephine (Gutierrez) Mullen on May 10, 1997, and also preceded him in death on April 4, 2005.

Mr. Mullen was a retired employee of Ford Motor Company. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 and American Legion Post 178, Moose Lodge 1320, Elks Lodge 1197 and Knights of Columbus Chapter 6034 (Fourth Degree Knight), all in Van Wert, and Wapakoneta Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include 11 stepchildren, John E. (Paula) Gutierrez of Paulding, Diann (Jeff) Ebel of Grover Hill, Gilbert (Denise) Gutierrez, Dan Gutierrez and Mariea (Dan) Moreland, all of Van Wert, Sue Szuch of Elida, Lou (Steve) Biberstine of Ohio City, Randy (Jeanene) Gutierrez of Rockford, Ron Gutierrez of Alpharetta, Ga., David (Marsha) Gutierrez and Bernadine (Klayton) Hooper of Cloverdale; and many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

A sister, Betty Jane Montgomery, also preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Fathers Charles Obinwa and Mike Zacharias officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be performed by the combined honors units of Legion Post 178 and VFW Post 5803.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, where a Rosary will be recited at 8 that evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus or the Council on Aging building project.
