80, of Van Wert, died on Saturday, October 2, 2010, in the morning at his residence.
He was born July 5, 1930, in Sugar Grove, OH. The son of the late John Joseph Staten and Mary Magdalene (McCrady) Staten. On December 18, 1952, he married Evelyn Elenora (Nutter) Staten, who survives in Van Wert.
In 1951, he received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army.
Mr. Staten was the owner and operator of the former Van Wert Ice & Supply Company in Van Wert. He retired in 1978.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn. One daughter, Sherry L.(James W.) Kitson of Ohio City, OH and one son, John Edward (Brenda K.) Staten,Jr. of Ohio City, OH; two sisters, Loretta (Joe) Blaney and Shirley (Carl) O'Tooile both of Lancaster, OH; two brothers, Fred (Jeannette) Staten and Kenny (Doris) Staten both of Sugar Grove, OH; Five grandchildren, Jeremy (Amanda) Kitson of Ohio City, OH, Jayme Kitson of West Palm Beach, FL, Nikki Staten of Van Wert, OH, Lindsay Staten of Ohio City, OH, Joshua Staten of Ohio City, OH; One Great-grandchild, Jacob Mattingly Kitson of Ohio City, OH.
A sister, Mary Ellen Shull; and three brothers, Harold Staten, Jimmy Staten and Danny Staten (at birth) also preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 8, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Father Mike Zacharias officiating. Burial will be in Kings/Bethlehem Cemetery on Kings Church Road in Harrison Township, Van Wert County.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 7, at the funeral home.
In Lieu of flowers and gifts, family would prefer memorial contributions to St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School.
