Joseph J. Myers

November 25, 1920 — February 5, 2005

84, of Van Wert, died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2005, at his residence.

He was born November 25, 1920, in Ohio City, the son of the late Fred and Camille (Smalley) Myers. On January 30, 1945, he married Valrea M. Myers, who survives in Van Wert.

Mr. Myers retired from Sonoco (Continental Can Company) on March 1, 1986, after 40 years of employment there. He was also a member of the Sonoco Retirement Club and was a 1938 graduate of Van Wert High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-1946. He was a deacon and co-founding member of Faith Baptist Church in Van Wert and was a member of First Baptist Church in Van Wert.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James A. (Jeanne) Myers of Fairborn; four daughters, Carolyn S. Baker, Rita D. Myers and Ruth Ann Myers, all of Van Wert, and Mary Lou (Rudy) Oakley of Grover Hill; one brother, John (Connie) Myers of Silver Lake, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, with three more expected, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Myers; two sisters, Deloris Taylor and Ida Mae Mosier, and a son-in-law, James R. Baker.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, at First Baptist Church in Van Wert, with the Rev. Steve Robinson. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, with military graveside rites performed by the combined honors units of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 and American Legion Post 178, both in Van Wert.

Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Monday, February 7, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, and from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
