Nolen D. "Noley" Burley
June 9, 1915 — October 21, 2008
93, of Van Wert, died at 12:24 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at Van Wert County Hospital in Van Wert.
He was born June 9, 1915, in Scott, the son of the late William and Gertrude (Thompson) Burley. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and a World War II veteran who loved his flag and country and was proud to have served in the U.S. Army in the Medical Detachment of the 379th Infantry.
Mr. Burley retired after 31 years from Kennedy Manufacturing Company and was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, American Legion Post 178, and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1320, all in Van Wert.
Nolen was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth E. (Foley) Burley, twin sons Ronald and Roland, who died at birth; and six brothers, Woodrow, Don, Dale, Ross, Ralph and Robert Burley.
Surviving are a son, Robert E. (Vicki) Burley of Payne; one daughter, Sandy (Jim) Williams of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a brother, Gale (Ruth) Burley of Van Wert; two sisters, Dorothy (Gene) Friemoth and Rosie (Dutch) Reeder, both of Van Wert; six grandchildren, Brian (Kristy) Vest of Payne, Aaron Burley of Roanoke, Adam Burley of Leipsic, Tami Preston, Lori Williams and Jimmy (Tracey) Williams, all of Fort Wayne, and Angie (Todd) Abke of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 24, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, with graveside military rites performed by the combined honors unit of VFW Post 5803 and Legion Post 178.
The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
