Robert O. Lybarger, age 85, of Van Wert, died at 4:20 PM Monday, May 18, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Indiana, as the result of injuries suffered in an accident. He was born in Van Wert on October 2, 1929, the son of the late Albert and Agnes (Bigelow) Lybarger. On July 25, 1959 he married Martha Jean Zinn who proceded him in death on August 27, 2003.
He is survived by his children: Suzanne (Joe) Wegmiller of Statesville, North Carolina- Nancy (Don) Fiegel of New Knoxville, Ohio- Tom (Wendy) Lybarger of Athens, Ohio- Larry (Deana) Lybarger of Cocoa Beach, Florida. Grandchildren: Emma Wegmiller, Marlee Wegmiller, Zaine (Laura) Fiegel, Riese Fiegel, Frank (Jessica) Hathaway, Pam Lybarger, and Brad (Kori) Lybarger. There are also 4 great grandchildren and two sisters: Carla Miller of Van Wert and Shirley Thompson of Ansonia, Ohio, surviving. . In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon Lybarger.
Bob was a retired educator having begun his career as an Industrial Arts instructor at Ottawa, then served as superintendent of the former Ohio City- Liberty district, and then joined the Van Wert City School system as principal at Jefferson and the former Pleasant schools. He was a graduate of the former Union High School, then continued his undergraduate degree at Bowling Green University and received his Masters Degree from The Ohio State University. Bob was an active member for 60 plus years of the Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church. He was very active in the Van Wert Senior Citizens and the Van Wert Co. Historical Society. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Van Wert American Legion Post 178. Also, he drove for the American Red Cross and was an avid Detroit Tigers and OSU football fan in addition to liking all sporting events.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:30 AM Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Brickner Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Lumm officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with Military Graveside Services by the combined Honors Unit of American Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803. Friends may call at Brickner Funeral Home Friday, May 22 from 2 - 6 and 1 hr. prior to services on Saturday. Preferred Memorials are to the Van Wert Senior Citizens Center, Van Wert Co. Historical Society, or a charity of the donor's choice.
