90, of Van Wert, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at The Meadows of Kalida.
He was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Delphos, Ohio, to the late Louis Moenter and Lovella (Fox) Moenter. On July 1, 1948, he married Aileen (Pople) Moenter. She died May 20, 1971.
He is survived by his children, Dr. James (Carol) Moenter of Centerville, Ohio, Patricia (Michael) Van Autreve of Kettering, Ohio, Dr. Julie (Doug Racine) Moenter of Bristol, Vt., Nancy (Ted) Macke of Ottawa, Ohio; a former sister-in-law, Linda Moenter of Centerville; his grandchildren, Wes (Abby) Van Autreve of Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Tina Van Autreve of Dayton, Ohio, Steve (Brenda Batyske) Moenter of Columbus, Alison (Eric) Siefker of Glandorf, Ohio, Stephanie Moenter and Dr. Stacey Moenter, both of Dayton, Ohio, Jacob (Anissa) Macke of Columbus Grove, Ohio, Drew (Laine Gerding) Macke of Perrysburg, Ohio, Neil Macke of Ottawa, Ohio; his great-grandchildren, Austin Macke, Owen Macke, Noah Macke, Lillian Siefker, and a sister, Luvella Hammill of Lima, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Moenter, and sisters, Marguerite Ewell, Mary Hughes, Helen Miller and Wilma Schramm.
Walter was a graduate of Delphos St. John's High School. He was a WW II veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving in the Pacific Theater. He was employed in sales by the former E J Evans Co. in Van Wert and later by Superior Wholesale Co. in Lima, retiring at age 70. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert and was a member of the church choir for over 50 years. He was choir director for 10 years. He was also a past president of the church council. He was a life member of Elks Lodge 1197 in Van Wert where he was a past Exalted Ruler and he also served as a district deputy. He was a life member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert and was chaplain for many years. He was also a member of 40 et 8 Post 154. He also was a member of Van Wert VFW Post 5803. He was a life member of Knights of Columbus Van Wert Council 6034. He was an active member of the Van Wert Council on Aging.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. The Rev. Mike Zacharias will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, with military graveside rites by the combined honors unit of American Legion Post 178 and VFW Post 5803, Van Wert.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, from 2-8 p.m. There will be an Elks Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a 40 et 8 service which will be followed by a rosary service.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the St. Mary's Parish, Van Wert County Council on Aging and the Elks Cerebral Palsy Fund.
